Specific guidelines for the Secondary Level:
 
  • Any student who has reached their 15th birthday at the time of enrollment shall be referred to the high school.
  •  
  • No student shall be permitted to begin a school year after they have reached their 19th birthday.

CUSD On-line Student Enrollment allows you to begin the enrollment process for students who live within the district boundaries.  You must have a valid address in the cities served by Capistrano Unified to use this system. For information on enrolling a student who  is currently attending and will be transferring schools within CUSD, contact the office at the appropriate school assigned to your residence to have your records transferred.  Please do not complete the Online Enrollment process.

Confirm Address.

Online Student Enrollment.
Click on the link here to be connected to the Capistrano Unified School District online enrollment website. Complete the information and submit on website. 
 
Please Note – Enrollment is different than the Registration Packet.
3.
Appointments.

Additional documents may be required by your school site.  For further information on documentation, please see the section below.  The school site will deem the entire enrollment process to be complete and acceptable after you meet in person with the Registrar and provide the required documents.
Scheduled appointments may take approximately 15 minutes for enrollment and 15 minutes with the Academic Advisor. Walk-ins are welcomed, however may need to make additional arrangements to meet with an Academic Advisor if the Advisor is not available at the time of walk-in. Walk-in’s must have all necessary documents and be prepared to wait if necessary.  Students who currently have an individualized educational plan (IEP) or 504 plan will need to anticipate additional steps to enroll.
4.
Class Selection.
The academic advisor will discuss classes and any other requirements with the student for class placement.
ENROLLMENT DOCUMENTS REQUIRED

ENROLLMENT DOCUMENTS REQUIRED

Verification of residency inside CUSD attendance area of parent, licensed foster parent, or California Superior Court-appointed legal guardian. For initial enrollment, parent or guardian must provide two documents from the list below (P.O. Box addresses are NOT accepted)
 
  • Utility bill (current electric, gas or water/sewer bill)
  • Current mortgage statement or rental agreement
  • Rental agreement
  • Property tax bill

If the above-described documents are not available, the parent/legal guardian may offer other documents as proof of residence. Examples of these documents are:
 
  • Bank statements
  • Moving company receipts
  • Service letter from a utility company verifying residency
  • An escrow statement followed by verification of closing documents is also acceptable

Proof of withdrawal from the previous school/district is required upon enrollment (secondary only)
 
Proof of Age is required:
  • Official or Certified Copy of the birth record
  • A statement by the local registrar or county recorder certifying the date of birth
  • A baptismal certificate or official hospital record of birth
  • A Passport, or
  • When none of the above is obtainable, an Affidavit for Proof of Age of Minor signed by the student's parent/legal guardian may be accepted.

Proof of Immunization Records are required for certifying up-to-date immunizations for each student. Click here for an explanation of the student health requirements for school entry including TB skin testing, immunizations, and examinations. Note the new state immunization requirements for students entering Grade 7.
 
A health checkup (physical examination) is required for all children entering first grade, however, the District encourages parents to obtain the health exam prior to or during the child's kindergarten year. The health exam will qualify if it is done 6 months prior to kindergarten entry or 18 months prior to first grade entry.
 
Emergency telephone numbers are required, including an out-of-state emergency number.
 
Other Documents and Information:
 
  1. An academic transcript or report card from your previous school.
  2. (Prior school records will be requested by the school in which your child enrolls.)
  3. For Special Education students: Current or most recent IEP and Assessments
  4. For GATE (gifted and talented) students: Please note that stand alone standardized achievement assessment results and/or grades/GPA do not meet GATE identification criteria in CUSD. Please provide:
    Prior test scores and/or certification forms. These may include any or all of the following: Cognitive Abilities Test (e.g., NNAT, OLSAT, CogAT) with a score of 96% Age PR (Only assessments administered by a school are accepted – no private assessments. IQ tests are not accepted.)
    OR
    Standardized test scores showing student exceeded  the standard in both the ELA and math of a state standardized achievement assessment (e.g., SBAC/CAASPP or PARCC) OR earned a minimum composite score of 95% (e.g., IOWA Basic Skills Test)  *Assessment scores must have been completed within the prior two school years.
    AND
    Documentation that student was identified as GATE at their previous district. Official GATE acceptance letter and official assessment scores must be submitted as documentation. 
    Without the above documentation, students will not be considered for GATE and will need to meet the Performance Criteria for Accelerated Placement in any CUSD Accelerated courses.
  5. For EL (English Learners) Students: a copy of current CELDT scores, if available.
     
    Caregiver's Authorization.
A notarized signed Caregiver's Authorization Affidavit is required if another adult is assuming responsibility for the student with permission from the student's parents.

REGISTRATION

Immediately after enrollment, a Registration Packet may be provided to the student.  All required registration forms must be completed and turned in on the first date of attendance. 
 
All students must complete the registration forms every year. This includes current CUSD students who are automatically enrolled from prior middle schools and LFMS students from the prior school year of attendance. These required forms includes the following:
 
  • Parent Portal Data Confirmation Sheet 
  • McKinney-Vento Assistance Act
  • Migrant Education Program (if applicable)
5TH GRADE STUDENTS
5th grade students who attend Las Flores Elementary School, Tijeras Creek Elementary School, or Wagon Wheel Elementary School and are in the feeder pattern to attend Las Flores Middle School due to the attendance boundaries will NOT be required to enroll with the Registrar.  Records for these students will be automatically imported into the middle school.  The LFMS Academic Advisor will conduct the Spring course enrollment process in February to assist 5th grade students in selecting their elective classes for 6th grade.  All students will be required to attend summer registration.
 
SCHOOL OF CHOICE PROCESS
The CUSD School of Choice allows families the opportunity to apply to attend another CUSD school that is not considered the neighborhood school serving the attendance area.
 
Families should review the information provided on the district CUSD website.  Any student approved on school of choice must consider that transportation is the responsibility of the parent/guardian. School of Choice is only available during specific dates. The School of Choice application period is open generally open early February-early March each school year. Parents/Guardians seeking placement for multiple children must submit a separate application for each child. 
 
INTERDISTRICT TRANSFER AGREEMENTS
The interdistrict transfer agreement process applies to those parents who wish their children to attend school in a district other than that in which they reside. All interdistrict attendance agreement requests must be initiated in the district of residence.
